Ten questions for an LMS backup vendor.
Backup claims become meaningful only when an institution knows exactly what is copied, how it is isolated, who can access it, and how recovery works.
- Is the preserved copy independently available when the LMS itself is unavailable?
- Which course, user, submission, grade, and file objects are actually captured?
- How frequently is data captured and how is completeness verified?
- Can authorized staff browse the archive without restoring everything first?
- What are the RPO and RTO, and when were restores last tested?
- How are tenants isolated and privileged actions logged?
- Where is data stored and how are encryption keys managed?
- What FERPA, state privacy, accessibility, and security evidence is available?
- What happens to the data at contract termination?
- What happens operationally if the vendor’s primary administrator is unavailable?
